The number one issue in today's turbulent conversation crisis is the armor of social media. People, myself included, can and do feel safe saying things to people known or unknown to them that they would never say face to face. Hence, the armor of distance and concealment in social media. Under the same heading, social media allows people to substitute acronyms for phrases and words. People need to develop a feel for and experience the joy of creating a message of their personal authorship. We text and Instagram abbreviated messages and replies with the coldness of an IRS audit letter. The art of face-to-face conversation is fading from non-practice and malpractice. Those once alluringly worded conversations and letters have been replaced by explosive seesaw verbal battles. The art of describing your inner spirit, your soul, is galloping away into the sunset.
Number two shook my soul. My spirit informed me about something I had forgotten, listening. Oh, how elegant and transforming listening can be. Listening has brought wars and centuries-long arguments to an end. Listening has won more hearts than looks. How could I forget my dear friend listening? We must remember, listening is as much of an art as speaking. With insightful listening, we have the possibility of uncovering the motivations behind the other person's beliefs, their soul. Without listening, we have little chance to discover that beautiful inward soul. We only see an outward dirty, world-beaten sole. A sole that has stepped in every human nastiness in existence, and it shows in our angry and filthy repertoire. Never leave listening out of a verbal or written conversation.
Listening and the right words mixed together in just the right proportions make an incredibly inviting recipe for an enjoyable conversation filled with hope. Our Lord and our God emphasize love-padded conversations due to their divine knowledge of its power to change, heal, save, and bring peace to everyone listening. Listen before you speak. Pray before you act. Make our Lord Jesus Christ the first and last conversation you have daily. Make our Lord the centerpiece of your daily conversation to gently let others know who fills your soul. We walk through the most disgusting things in life with our soles, but our souls should be pure. With pure souls, we can turn conversations back into loving, informing, touching, and hopeful exchanges between two souls, as God meant when he gave us the Word, Jesus Christ.
