Our day began with sunny skies and a slight breeze. To allow for as much time near the water as possible, we decided to pack a lunch and have a picnic on the beach. With coolers and umbrellas in tow we trudged from the parking lot toward an ideal spot near the incoming waves. Of course much chit chat ensued. There was much catching up to do.
As we passed the restrooms and food court, we shook our heads at the long lines in front of food wagons. And look at the prices! Besides that, who would want to waste precious beach time sitting in a food court! Our idea of bringing a packed cooler seemed much more practical.
Splashing in the waves and scanning the beach for shells stirred our appetites quickly. We gathered on our blankets and began laying out our tempting lunch. Jenny unwrapped a ham and cheese sandwich and handed it to her husband. But alas, before he could take hold of it, a cheeky sea gull swooped down and grabbed it from Jenny’s hand. The look of surprise on her face is stamped on our memories forever! “It grabbed the sandwich right out of my hand,” she lamented.
We moved in closer together while the rest of our lunch was distributed and eaten. All the while the squawking sea gulls circled overhead. Why were the birds bothering only us? We finished our lunch quickly and put all the scraps back into the cooler and continued with our cherished family time together.
Late afternoon, tired, but content, we gathered our things and headed for the parking lot. As we left the sand area near where the food court began, someone exclaimed, “Look! That sign says ‘No food or open containers on beach’!” Ohhh, now it was making sense. No wonder the birds weren’t bothering anyone else. No wonder the food court was busy.
None of us would have flagrantly ignored the sign. In our delight of being together, no one saw the warning. It has been many years since that delightful day, but it continues to be a well-told memory. Ignorance is indeed bliss!
