TITLE: The Passionate Sermon | Previous Challenge Entry

The Priest, in his vestments,
And before his Lordship,
His hands composedly out-stretched,
And holy Bible dangling in his right hand,
Zealously preaches God’s words.
Brethren, open your Bibles!
John chapter 3 verse 16…
“God so loved the world,
That he gave his only son…”
Stop there! (He pauses, for effect…),
His hands out-stretched,
As he surveys his audience,
For automatic approval.
The anointed Priest,
Inspired by his faith,
Confidence-given,
By his impressed audience,
Priestly delivers his sermon,
Punctuated by calculated cadences,
Of his baritone voice and bionic movements,
Galvanising the audience to intense listening!
Repent thy sins, brethren,
For you have all to gain,
By so doing –
Inheriting joys of eternal life,
In heavenly kingdom,
Where death is totally absent,
Singing, praising and worshiping the Lord.
From the audience,
I saw and listened,
To this shepherd of the Lord,
From start, through mid to end.
As I meditated over the sermon,
Full of sentimental invocations,
And unexplainable promises,
I wondered what authority,
This guy had to admonish mankind thus,
And promising so much to humble believers!
Will no one interpret to mankind,
What this Priest is sayings?
Does the Bible tell it all?
Will be-soiled man of ages ago,
From Adam to Zachariah,
Resurrect tomorrow to meet the Lord,
In acceptable human form,
Or wouldn’t it better Lord,
Simply, by word of mouth,
Like you did at genesis,
Create a better generation,
Than, bother to resurrect old sinners,
Who may need costlier repairs?
Will noone ask this Priest,
To explain to his audience,
The human logic,
Of transferring racialist Jerusalem,
According to radical Islamists,
And rebellious Zion,
From Palestine and Judea,
Into heaven for Adam’s descendants?
Will the Priest,
Explain to his audience,
The meaning of Omniscient God’s indifference,
To human curiosity to hear or see Him?
Would it be too much for man,
To entreat the Lord for a single appearance,
In the midst of universe,
And in one loud voice,
Address the human race,
On a subject of His own choice?
As these sacrilegious sins,
Crossed my sceptical mind,
I saw the Priest‘s pointing finger:
“Repent thy sins!’’ – he exhorted.
As I thought of running out of Church,
To hide in the open Universe,
The fear of the Lord’s argus eye frightened me.
Like a school boy itching with an idea,
I thought of putting up my hand,
For permission to stand up to speak,
And confess my sins.
But that, too, was too hard,
As if some invisible hand in attendance,
Pulled it down back unto my shoulders.
Dear Brethren,
The pleaded, almost in tears.
‘’The Lord is all merciful!’’ he moaned.
The eloquent Priest loudly harangued!
To the eloquent sermon, I listened,
To the bionic theatrics, I viewed,
As I tuned unto my heart’s palpitations.
With style and dexterity,
He priestly summed up his sermon perorations,
With a meticulous frenzy,
Spiritually charged with sublime ecstasy,
That galvanized the audience -
Into the Amazing grace – how sweet the sound –
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
