I have met parents who have not seen grown children for years. Sometimes there is a reunion when one of the parents is on their death bed, but the years of separation can never be restored. Being hit with a rock would have been so easy in comparison.
As a teenager in high school I received verbal criticism for something I did not think was just. The words were leveled by someone I did not dare argue with, so I remained silent. To this day, decades later, if I allow myself to think about this incident, I get a sinking, sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.
And, to be honest, I am sure I have caused someone else pain. Saying harsh words is often excused by declaring, “That’s the way I am.” Or, “I didn’t really mean it.” But once uttered, words can never be taken back. I would encourage each of us to think before casting angry words, or criticism. Remember, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words may hurt forever!”
King Solomon was so ‘right on’ when he wrote, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24 NIV). Just as I can recall so vividly words that sting, I often recall kind words that are a balm to my heart and make my face smile. Those are the kinds of words for which I want to be known.
“Father, help me to guard my lips. I want my words to be sweet and bring healing to the bones.”
