ADD TO MY FAVORITES
by needs so many and great,
that they are ignored, like Lazarus
neglected at the rich man’s gate?
Have our eyes chosen blindness
making invisible the scores,
so alone that not even dogs
come and attend to their sores?
Have we become so comfortable
using our unacknowledged wealth,
that we claim too little is leftover
to help improve anyone’s health?
Have we become so callused
that we just no longer care,
simply denying by justifying
deprivation to be ever there?
Have we wilted in weakness
allowing want to lay unattended,
preaching, and flaunting blessings
as world woes go unamended?
Have our testimonies lost effect
because messages they endorse,
can no longer be visibly seen
by those needing to change course?
Have pleas of the downtrodden
become a note of life so deep,
its lost in the song it tries to sing
or just lulls the hearer to sleep?
Have we become so imprisoned
time holds us captive, as we flit,
looking for excuses in its strands
to explain our lack, by lack of it?
Have we lost the understanding
that our ability to redeem,
to change the outcome of a wrong
affects more than it may seem?
Have we forgotten, redemption
is love in action, before too late,
flipping fate, by loving enough to hate
flowers crushed at society’s gate?
Have we enough conscience left
to consciously avow our crime,
complacency – stay or die - when next
opportunity cries to redeem the time?
