Carol looked at the menu quickly, then looked at Sheryl. Sympathetically, Sheryl replied, “You must really be disappointed. I know you want to lead her to Jesus some day.”
“Humph! That will be awhile I’m sure. I feel like such a failure. I thought life was supposed to be easier for Christians. Why do I keep doing the things I don’t want to do?”
“Your situation reminds me of the letter Paul wrote to the Romans.” Carol leaned in to focus on Sheryl’s words. “The Apostle Paul also lamented, ‘I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.’”
Carol perked up. “That’s right! That’s exactly how I feel!”
She sipped her latte as Sheryl continued, “Paul comforted his listeners by pointing out that that is why God sent Jesus. He knows we are not perfect no matter how hard we try. He knows our weaknesses. He is always ready to forgive and give another chance. There is a promise in Hebrews that is encouraging as well, ‘We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.’”
A look of relief washed over Carol. “Wow, that is encouraging. Maybe I am being too hard on myself.”
Emptying her cup, Carol added, “Please say a prayer for me to not give up. I know I must apologize to my sister and try harder to treat her with kindness. And, I don’t want to confuse Christianity with being perfect, again!”
