miles away,
from who I want to be.
If only I could leap
from who I am today
and squarely land
as the person I want to become.
If it were that easy,
that simple,
I’d have done it long ago.
But here I am,
lamenting where I am,
looking to find my way,
longing to grow.
My mind
flounders,
then focuses,
fixates
on things that take me down a path
of negativity,
and soon I feel nervous,
overwhelmed,
and I spiral,
going deeper,
deeper,
getting lost in despair.
May I learn
to deviate from this road
I’ve taken too many times,
and may I sway
toward a new direction,
veering away from what hurts me,
swerving around the thoughts that take me down,
and moving closer to a better,
more positive me
who can feel at rest
and revel in peace and joy.
It’s a long journey,
but one that will be worth every step
so I may adjust my attitude,
grow in my faith,
and draw closer to the One
who takes my small changes
and from them,
makes real change possible.
On this trail to transformation,
I first slide my foot forward,
I pause,
I take a small step.
It’s a start,
and it gives me hope
of more steps to come.
