The bottle shook in his hands. So much so that he had to lay down and tip the bottle into his mouth. At first it wanted to come back up, but as he took a few deep breaths, the whiskey warmed him on the inside and nausea passed. The first drink of the day was in his system.
10:00 am.
No work today. Lied to his wife, told her he was there. He wasn’t. He was at the bar. As usual. Model husband. Yeah. That’s him.
11:00 am.
She said her name was Mary Anne. He didn’t ask. He didn’t care.
12:00 pm.
He opened the hotel door with the card provided. Mary Anne followed him into the room. He turned the light on. She went straight to the bathroom. To “tidy up.” He went to the bed. Lay there a moment. His head was spinning.
12:10 pm.
He opened the nightstand drawer. To put his keys and wallet in. That’s when he saw it. A Bible. Gideon’s. Not really understanding why, he picked it up.
12:15 pm.
He put $50.00 on the table. And left.
5:30 pm.
Dinner was over. Nancy got up to do dishes. He helped her. “You going to church tonight? For prayer meeting?” She looked at him. “Yes,” she said. “Can I go?” She gave him a puzzled look. “I’d love nothing more.” He smiled. She smiled.
