“The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord”
But was he the Lord’s anointed? Some called him a tyrant. Some said that a true leader would not ignore the people’s grievances and deny an audience from them for eleven years. A just king would not demand the arrest of five representatives of the people purely for disagreeing with him. How could our Lord use such a vile beast to enact his will on Earth?
It was a glorious day. Peace was restored. England had been in the grips of a long and sickening civil war. Charles’ execution brought hope. Cromwell’s usurpation signalled an abolition of the aristocratic remnant of feudalism. It ushered in an age of rule by the people. He had revolutionised the social systems, promoting military officers on merit, not heritage. He was a man of the people, a parliamentarian, and a puritan protestant. God did not want a monarch with unquestioned authority purely based on dynastic succession. Look at the judges: each an individual leader, each raised from the people to save the people. A new order was on the horizon.
It was a glorious day. The London air was thick with quiet anticipation. People dared not dance in joy lest the remnant of Cromwell’s tyranny entrap them within its cold grip. England had been plunged from one autocratic system to another. The Parliamentarian had dissolved parliament. The anti-monarchist had become king in all but name. He had imposed a strict puritan state, given legitimacy not by the people but by his military might. One tyrant had replaced another. Now that tyrant lay in his grave.
Word was circulating. The King’s son would return to take his rightful place as ruler. We would restore God’s representative on Earth. Clearly, our Lord had punished the nation for decapitating his appointed servant. This was our time to set our wrongs to right. We look forward to the shining new day where this man of God would lead us in glory: a man who would respect the people, who would live well but not lavishly, who would be faithful to his wife, and who would rule justly. God did not want a self-righteous, self-appointed man from the people. Look at David, chosen to serve Israel as King and promised that his descendants would sit on their father’s throne. A new order was on the horizon.
The cold Winter nights continue.
I open my eyes. The glorious radiance compels me to gaze in awe and yet it is too bright, it casts the light on my deepest secrets. The line extends far into the distance, each an anxious individual isolated in infinite insecurities. They shuffle forward in shame, their downcast faces inevitably drawn towards the glorious face, almost blinded by his numinous glow. In front of me, two men stand side by side. The first is almost unrecognisable without his flowing regalia. His piercing eyes dart out from his sharp, angular face. He trembles in rage as he takes in the face of his rival, warts and all.
“Stewart, Charles.” the voice boomed, beckoning them towards their impending fate.
“Cromwell, Oliver.”
The two men stumbled towards their judge and their king, trembling in awe of his omnipotent majesty.
Both men had been symbols of hope. Both men had become dictators. Both men had become confident in their status. Regardless, of their rank, both men faced judgement day.
A new order has come.
