So I bought some in the tube, that scared the heebie-jeebies out of me when they popped. I tossed the unrolled package away before I carefully set the spirals in a round pan, as the directions suggested.
I immediately had to retrieve the tube to find the oven temperature.
Directions:
1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F (375 degrees F for dark or nonstick pan)
I tossed it back in the trash. I mumbled, “400 degrees,” as I set the oven dial.
As I was about to toss the package back in the trash, I notice the next part.
2. Place rolls in pan, cinnamon topping up.
I looked over at my pan of rolls. “Oh, goodness me. I’ve got some upside down.” I tossed the package and wiped my hands on the damp towel before fixing my mistake.
When the oven was hot, I slid my pan inside. I had forgotten how long they should bake, so I pulled the package from the trash again.
3. Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until golden brown.
4. Spread with icing.
“Icing?” It was then I noticed a crumpled plastic bag in the end of the tube. I pulled it out and set it aside for later. I looked again at the directions. “Bake 13 to 17 min.” It’s been at least a minute. I set it for 12 minutes, just to be sure they wouldn’t be overdone. I read the directions one more time before tossing it once more in the trash.
In minutes, a tantalizing aroma meandered from the kitchen, waking the various members of the family, including the twins. Of course, they needed immediate attention. Little Jimmy wasn’t quite potty trained and had soaked himself this morning. I stripped the wet things from him and his bed, tossed them in the washer, and started the machine. Just as I pulled a clean shirt over his head, I heard the kitchen timer buzz. “Oh no! The cinnamon rolls!”
I grabbed a potholder and snatched the pan from the oven. They were a little more than golden brown, but not too bad. I looked around for the bag of icing, but it was nowhere to be seen. I knew I had taken it out of the tube, but I pulled it out of the trash AGAIN, just to be sure. Nope, it wasn’t there. Where could it be?
It was then I saw a white gooey blob on the floor. A few inches farther was another drizzle and another one. I followed the trail across the kitchen and into the dining room. At one point, it looked like someone or something had smeared it in wide semi-circles. This was turning into a mystery, and I felt like Sherlock Holmes.
My next clue was Barney. He was happily wagging his tail and licking the door frame. I assumed I had found what made the smears in the other room. Jimmy and I followed Barney into the living room, and I groaned as I saw him following the sweet trail across the carpet and onto the upholstered couch, Barney sniffed and licked here and there, spending more attention to bigger drops. Satisfied at completing that room, he put his nose to the floor and headed down the hallway, giving the floor or walls a quick lick along the way.
With the help of my trusty sidekicks, I found the culprit and solved the crime. There sat Johnny in the middle of the ball pit, with a half-empty plastic bag. He was frosted from forehead to fingertips with the white goop. He looked up at me with his blue eyes and sweet smile. “Mmmm. . . dewishus!” He was just too funny and too cute to let my frustration give way to anger.
It took me forever to get every sticky spot cleaned up. As I washed balls, floors, and chairs, I marveled at how one little person could spread his sweetness everywhere. I thought of how my life should trail joy wherever I go. At least, it wasn’t as messy.
Our breakfast wasn’t like I had planned, and it was five more years before I attempted baking cinnamon rolls again. It was just too much work.
