TITLE: Sunlight and Shadows | Previous Challenge Entry

Off the local duck pond
As I shuffle with Scout through
Rusty, scarlet carpets.
Their spicy duskrence
Wafts up to fill my mind
With memories of childhood
Games of crunchy hills.
Wind flickers through
Clapping golden disks, that
Play with glittering sparkles and
Dance with the squirrels
And chickadees,
Who scurry and flit
Among the branches,
Alerting Scout’s attention.
Smoke of burning grass,
Drifting from a nearby farm,
Reminds of boyhood adventures,
Crackling campfires, and spooky tales.
Glowing eyes, reflected in the firelight,
Surround us in the darkness.
A craving for a roasted wiener
Elicits a stomach growl.
Park bench cool behind me,
I lean back, feeling warmth
Upon my weathered cheeks.
A memory of another cheek,
So soft and smooth,
And a shy lover’s first kiss.
It seems like only yesterday,
And yet forever ago.
Geese honk overhead,
Heading south 'til warmer times.
Their lonesome cries recall
Sad "goodbyes" of those
Gone long years ago.
I sigh and wipe the tear,
And Scout’s nose comes near.
A companion, a comfort,
Offering his friendship.
Sunset reflects from steeple tall,
Gleaming bright against
Darkening skies.
Bells chime a familiar hymn,
“In the Sweet By and By.”
Scout stands and waits,
Looking at the growing shadows.
Glowing path of golden leaves
Beckons me home.
