I made sure to turn the television off so I could hear its arrival and be ready. It was so quiet that I could hear my heart beating in my chest and the blood rushing through my veins. My lap was wet with my tears and I found it hard to breathe. The pressure was mounting and there was nothing I could do about it. It would be here soon.
I clenched my legs tight to my body and prayed to the Lord for protection. Being alone, I was scared and helpless. I had been through this too many times to count and each time it was worse than the time before. Picking up the pieces the next day and moving forward was becoming more difficult. I didn’t know if I could do it anymore.
Peering over my arm, I looked at the closed door. A sliver of light from the bedroom lamp was showing. I would know when the light flickered that it was close. I shut my eyes when I heard the warning sound outside. It was here.
I thought if maybe I held my breath and pretended like I wasn’t here that it would go away but it didn’t. All I could do was pray quietly and beg the Lord to keep his hand on me.
“Lord, please don’t let this happen again.” I secretly prayed, “Please God make it stop.”
I heard a whoosh and a crack outside the door. It was here. I looked at the door and saw the light under it flicker and go dark. The door began to shake violently. I stayed still and held my breath bracing for the impact.
Within moments the door swung open and slammed against the sink. It came open with such force that the porcelain cracked and chips of it fell to the floor. Instinctively, I scrambled over near the toilet and tried to squeeze my body between it and the wall. I thought if I got into that small space, I would be safe. I heard the snap and the crack again and before I could scream, it was on me. Blood gushed from my naked legs and ran down to the tile floor. It flowed on the mortar between them in straight lines.
My arms came up to shield my face when I saw it coming towards me. I tried to squeeze further down closer to the floor and into the corner but nothing helped. As I braced myself for it to strike again, the room became quiet. My tears were coming in streams that I could not stop and I was scared to look in front of me. My whole body was wet with my tears and blood. It shouldn’t have been over so soon because this time I knew it would be worse than last time. It always was until now. I looked up and standing in the doorway was a policeman.
“It’s over now, Grace. You don’t have to be scared anymore.” He held out his hand and helped me up.
There were paramedics in the bedroom. They quickly started to take care of my wounds. I glanced around and saw it through the window. It was gone now and couldn’t hurt me again. I knew the Lord had been with me. He not only got me through it but removed it from me so it could never scare or hurt me again.
