“That’s no way to speak about Big H, our husbands’ boss, Devorah, especially on his birthday. At least you were invited to his birthday bash.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, Ariella, it’s more like Big H ordered me and David to be here, just in case a foreign guest wanted to do a business deal and ‘his majesty’ needed David to do some quick currency calculations.”
“I guess you’re right. Chaim was also instructed to be here; also for trade deals that might go down. Mind you, most of the men look too drunk to do any deals.”
“That’s when some men are at their best, Ariella, as you know. Talking of the foreign guests, just look at the way they’re looking at him—they seem as disgusted as I am.”
“They know that they’re invited because they can be of benefit to him; it’s called mixing business and diplomacy, my friend, something you should cultivate more of.”
“David says that Big H promised to promote him to head of foreign business relations—I say don’t count your chickens? Oh look, Lady H is going over to that slutty daughter of hers—commonly known as Little S among the decent young ladies—probably giving her some instructions on how to get the most out of the rich guests tonight, if you know what I mean? Now she’s whispering in her ear; wish I was a fly on the wall.”
“You really have a nasty, suspicious mind, Devorah; but I guess it’s common knowledge that Lady H is the real brains behind the whole organization. Big H knows which side his bread is buttered on, so he plays along with the charade.”
“It’s sick, and I have a headache. If I had a wish I’d wish this band that’s playing would keep the volume down, I can hardly hear myself thinking. Oh, oh; looks like Big H read my mind—he’s signaled for them to stop playing so he can make an announcement. Oh no, I can’t believe this—he’s … he’s getting Little S to perform for us.”
“I heard her singing once; it was terrible. Now they’re clearing the floor in the middle of the hall—can you believe it, he wants her to dance? This is going to be embarrassing; I don’t think I can watch. I’m going to leave the room.”
“You’d better stay put if you know what’s good for you. There she goes; she sure is energetic. Oh,oh, I thought this might happen; her clothes are coming off.”
“That’s probably the limit of the poor girl’s repertoire; what a shame. Tell me when she’s finished; I really can’t watch her make an idiot of herself.”
“At least the men are all enjoying it. They’re clapping and cheering her.”
“They would; but that doesn’t mean much, Devorah, you know what men are like. Looks like she’s finishing her routine; she’s thrown herself on the floor in front of step-daddy and is staring up at him with fluttering eyes and heaving bosoms—quite a novel ending. Now he’s bending over her. Wonder what she’s telling him?”
“Or asking him. She’s got everything that open and shuts, there can’t be much more she could need.”
“On the contrary. By the looks of it, she’s asked for something that even Big H can’t supply—he looks mortified—he’s gone the color of a sheet.”
“Whatever it is, Lady H seems to be pleased. Let’s wander over and see if we can hear what’s going on.”

On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted and had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. (Matthew 14:6-11, NIV)
