Topic: FRESH START (01/05/17)
Life often begins with a seed. Sometimes seeds are planted deliberately, other times they may be scattered randomly. Either way they are likely to lay dormant for a time. Weeks or even years may pass as the seed exists but doesn’t live. At some point some moisture may be introduced and perhaps some warming rays of sunlight. Enzymes begin to turn starches to sugars, providing energy that allows the process of germination to begin. A tender root begins to emerge from the seed to anchor it and soon a shoot begins to travel upward reaching for the sun to grasp the energy that it will provide. A new life has begun.

A seed has no control over this process. Moisture, warmth, oxygen, sunlight are all provided, they don’t come from the seed at all. Yet, when everything comes together life happens and when it happens it begins to perpetuate. Cells divide and become more complex, growth is inevitable at this stage. More nutrients are required and they are provided. The process continues and life flourishes.
A seed may appear to be simple and unassuming, but given the right circumstances the end result is nothing more than miraculous. Fresh new life is a wonderful thing to behold. At the same time, seasoned mature life carries a beauty all of its own. It is the mature life that provides the seeds. The early stages of life is a time to grow, the latter is the time to produce seeds. It has been said to never underestimate the power of a seed. But the seed is not the source of the power.

I have often thought that one of God’s purposes in giving us the natural world is to illustrate the spiritual world. Concepts that seem obscure and difficult to understand become clear when we look at the world around us. Observing the process of a mature life providing a seed for a new life brings immeasurable insight on how we can help each other grow, and how God can facilitate the growth. A seed that can bring spiritual life may be a simple word of encouragement, a song, a prayer or perhaps just being present at a time of need. Seeds are being scattered and planted all the time, sometimes intentionally other times unintentionally. Many farmers will tell you that their job is to plant the seed but it is God that will make it grow. There is great wisdom in this statement. Mature life provides the seeds for new life, and so it goes.
