At this point, we hung back a second to get our bearings and then moved as one to the car. The SUV chirped its happy greeting and unlocked the doors to let us in. City noises in the background and stifling heat of the car – both, barely noticed.
My husband listened to the friendly female online voice as she navigated him through the busy city onto the interstate. Other than that...silence. I made up conversations in my head. I needed to say or do something to break the eeriness that shrouded us, but nothing fit. It all seemed trite.
Our son and his girlfriend sat in the back. Her head lay on his shoulder; her eyes closed. He stared straight ahead.
What words do we use to break the unnerving quiet? What words can express what we just went through? What can we say to each other?
And then…it was like the car couldn’t contain the quiet any longer.
I touched my husband on the shoulder and smiled.
He looked through the mirror and caught our son’s eye. A grin.
Our son kissed his girlfriend, and she and I both wiped away tears.
And we whooped and hollered!
The best news of our lives. The best news a doctor will ever utter:
The cancer is gone.
The cancer is gone!
