“Pappy, why does the moon follow the sun? Why doesn't the sun stop and let the moon catch up to it?”
They sat together on the crown of the hill, the moon in its brilliance rising slowly above the horizon, casting a pale, gentle glow across the countryside.
“The moon will never catch the sun, little one. It's the way the Creator made it. A great light to illuminate the days, a lesser light to guard the nights. The sun will only linger for so long at the edge of the moon's world. Just long enough to say goodnight or good morning to the moon, then she's off to see to the rest of her tasks.”
“Wow! Do you think they ever stop for a nap?” The little one's eyes beamed nearly as brightly as the light that hovered above them now.
“No, not even for a nap. The sun brings day to our great planet wherever she goes, just as the moon brings night wherever he goes.”
“They must get real tired. If I run and play all day, my eyes won't stay open at night.”
The older one smiled fondly at the little one with tousled hair. “Our Maker made you that way on purpose. Carefully crafting little boys so they simply cannot stay awake when the moon arises.”
“But why didn't He make us so we would play all day and all night, too? Wouldn't that be more fun?” His inquisitive eyes sparkled at the delightful idea.
The moonlight was now mesmerizing as it freed from mysterious chambers of hidden light a subdued, pale glow that enveloped the two.
“He is wise. He knew we old people could not keep up with you all day and answer all your questions at night. It was His great mercy on us to give you sleep.” The older one gave a loving chuckle. He looked down at the child who leaned on him and saw his eyes begin to close.
“Does God sleep, Pappy? Will He sleep with me tonight?”
“No, little one. Our Creator watches over us day and night. He neither slumbers nor sleeps.”
He picked up the small child in his arms just as the little one's weary voice whispered, “Goodnight Moon. Goodnight Maker. Goodnight Pappy.”
And they left the crown of the hill while the moon bid them each a fond farewell.
