Two thousand years ago
She was founded here on earth
A body comprised of those
Who had received their new birth
Jesus washed their sins away
Beneath that crimson flood
Adding them to the body
That he purchased with his blood
She consists of many members
With Jesus being the head
That he might have preeminence
As the firstborn from the dead
Her members help each other
The strong needing the weak
Each with different talents
And every one unique
She labors together with God
Tirelessly bringing forth fruit
Giving the gospel to sinners
With the devil in pursuit
She tells the old, old story
From that she’ll never tire
Grabbing those headed for hell
And pulling them from the fire
The world doesn’t understand
It probably never will
Why she works so zealously
The commission to fulfill
Unless they join the body
They don’t see the sacrifice
That Jesus freely gave
Making her the bride of Christ
They mock and persecute her
While they revel in their fun
But when trouble pays a visit
To her they often run
She was built upon the rock
Against her nothing will prevail
Not Satan, and not the world
Not even the gates of hell
The scoffers cannot stop her
From her mission she’ll not roam
Until that long awaited day
Her savior calls her home
