like my steamy temper
that I’d let boil
and rise
at every attempt to open my eyes
to my need for Jesus
how I would despise
the mention of His name.
I could do things under my own steam
was my constant refrain,
didn’t need a supposed God
engineering my life train,
didn’t need to be wrapped
in some vaporous lie
of some fairy tale hell
“unsaved” go when they die.
Didn’t want hot-air preachers
by the score
telling me about a God
that loved us more
than anything
while death’s vaporous stench
permeated every inch
of the world
as wars religiously themed
caused such division and hate…
just the thought of it
had me steamed—
and would grate
on my nerves just hearing a God cared!
But God tried and tried—
Oh how He tried to get me to see,
the problems and failures
were not Him—but me
and all mankind
that refused to absorb
the sauna of His love,
to let it seep in our pores
and steam away our impurities.
But I wouldn’t listen
and blasphemed His name,
deeming believing to be
like steam on a mirror
simply blocking my view.
I was the smart one; I would proclaim
I had no need for a God
or to play a fool’s game.
Then a day came my heart failed
and there I stood before Him
with the truth unveiled.
As He told me
“I never knew you—you must depart,”
I could see the words totally broke His heart!
Then Hell’s gateway opened
its vapors circling me like bands
and I looked through its dark mist
and noticed His nail scarred hands.
Then I looked into Jesus’ eyes—
“forgive me,” I began to scream!
The last I remember seeing
was His tears through the steam.
Then I awoke…
thankful it was just a dream!
Or maybe a figment of fear?
But was it? No!—No!—NO!—
My mind’s never been more clear!
Satan had poured my waters of unbelief
onto his lava of lies—
but NEVER again
because I saw Jesus’ eyes
and His tears through the steam.
