Windowpanes are frosted, whitewashed beauty, every one
Children turn their eyes toward V-formations in the skies
Pumpkins ripen to rustic orange to become creamy tasty pies
Frozen diamonds shimmer in the new-day golden light
Just now a chilling memory stirs of last winter’s plight
Shivering and weary, our lanterns shone through horses breath
Blowing snow formed tombs--weakened cattle froze to death
Fear stabbed at vows made by this rancher’s wife
Cold reality now asked--is this the ranching life
Naïve romantic notions swept away by howling winds
All I wanted now was for this tragic night to end
A lone tear escapes recalling such deep discouragement
But God strengthened me with love’s faith-filled cement
God taught me perseverance while my husband taught me skills
That season of testing taught acceptance of God’s will
When I learned to bend as branches under siege
And close my ears to fear and doubts--then with faith believe
The grip that strangles hope could not take hold of me
For God supplies my needs through the blessed Trinity
Worldly storms attack and defeat us if we’re weak
Thunderclaps of gloom that enter hearts--death they speak
Discouraging trials are bitter cold, they bite and they sting
Turn to God for help, trusting that He’s capable of anything
The warmth of His promises, to each of them I cling
When tough times bring challenges, I reflect on lovely things
The frosted panes are melting from radiant beams of gold
Seasons bring their bounty in the earth and in our souls
