That’s what everyone said.
My lines were sleeker, more detailed by far
Than the everyday, ordinary stock.
Gilded and etched, a jeweled ballerina,
I lifted my neck in pride.
Their praises polished my shiny patina
None compared to this light of mine.
Empty of oil and a clean cotton wick, never used,
My appraised value increased
Above lamps whose flames were smoky and diffused.
My light was designed for show.
Silence settled o’er the commercial, busy crowd;
The Maker had arrived.
Whispered comments floated speculatively around,
Which lamp would He choose?
Singled out, hand-picked above the common wares
The Maker selected me.
Expecting it, knowing it should be, I gloated with airs.
Of course, mine was best.
Melted and roughly stripped of my regal attire,
I cried out in pain;
Hidden from honor, scoured with sand and fire,
In nakedness, I cowered in shame.
Soothing, healing oil flowed throughout my empty soul,
Quieting my fears,
Rising up my cotton wick, filling with joy, making me whole;
This lamp of mine began shining bright.
Invisible, except for the warm glowing flame,
The only part that was seen.
The searching, stumbling, and wandering came
Drawn to this feeble light of mine.
Seeing the influence of my light upon dark,
My old pride returned.
Lifting my service as an act of worshipful mark;
My light flickered and dimmed.
Nothing was I without my jewels and gold;
Yet I desired them no more;
Nothing was I without my flame burning bold;
The light was all of Him, not mine.
Bowing low in humble confession and prayer,
I acknowledge my sin.
Giving the Creator honor, glory, and power;
The Maker’s light has become all to me.
