Children shout and sing;
Shoppers yell and shout;
Workers run about;
Presents and gifts galore;
Paper strew ‘cross the floor;
Friends wishing you good cheer;
Christmas is almost here.
Where is “peace on earth?” Where is the gentle message of Christmas?
The world is filled with hate and anger. Men disregard the value the life of their fellow men. The news is packed with reports of war and protests and hunger and blood. People’s lives are filled with greed and selfishness. They think only of themselves and demand that their wishes become their rights. Few are the ones who give without publicity. Few are the ones who sacrifice for their neighbor.
Like the wise men, I seek the meaning of that first “Silent Night.”
My heart yearns for some quietness. I ponder the blessedness of that first Christmas, when the only sounds were the shuffling of donkey hooves, the munching straw by gentle cows, and the soft bleating of a lamb.
I think of Mary caressing the smooth small cheek of her baby son, a special gift from God. What love! My heart overwhelms to think that the Almighty God, the Great Creator, became a tiny child. O the wonder of the thought! He sleeps within his mother’s arms.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
I wish I was there when Jesus walked the roads of Jerusalem and Galilee. I wish I had seen Him calm the waves, gather the children on his knee, and bring the dead to life. His heart must have grieved at men’s pride – their hate and lies and disbelief. He came give them joy and peace, but they could not see His gift of love and mercy.
Jesus is not just the babe in the manger; He is the mighty King. He is holy and just and will not allow sin to rule this world forever. Hate is strong, but God is stronger. Evil dominates, but Christ will return and all men will bow before Him. God is good and faithful. His word is true. My heart is still and knows that He is God.
