It read, “Please help me and mine”
He clutched his shirt, turned up its collar,
And hoped giving hearts could share a dollar
People glanced with judgment glares
He prayed, Please God, let someone care
Damp coldness bit, it gave him shivers
As winter’s wind blew through Three Rivers
His mind focused on her "I love you’s"
How her eyes shone with her pregnant news
How lives can change in four months time
He thought as he lingered behind his sign
Job security, now an old-fashioned word
“We have to downsize. . .” is all he heard
Charity was scarce, wallets did not open
But the Mighty One is who he had hope in
He gripped his sign with mounting faith
Lord, what You give is yours to take
In humbleness the next few hours
He prayed and trusted in God’s powers
The sky darkened, the day was spent
Small donations barely covered rent
Homeward bound, a two mile walk,
More opportunity for quiet talk
Unburdened, peace draped his bone-chilled shoulders
Though he hadn’t noticed it had grown much colder
Welcoming windows cast their cozy glow,
Together inside, love's devotion flowed
His wife’s eyes twinkled as she told her story
Of generous neighbors that gave God the glory
for blessings, which now they gladly shared
And hearts grew brighter because others cared
When in faith we plead our case
And wait for answers without haste,
Our struggling times will surely cease
Because He lives, our Prince of Peace
