Exchanged for streaks of coming night -
I breathed welcome release.
After the gruelling battle fought
‘ Neath burning heat and sun’s onslaught,
There came a restless peace
Which wrapped my heart without a sound -
Beware, Beware, Enchanted Ground!
The armour that had saved my soul
Felt weighty with a heavy toll
And a light whisper grew:
‘Relax, relax, you’ve fought your fight
You don’t need armour through the night,
Lay down, this fight is through!
Come, close your eyes, sleep free, unbound’ -
Beware, Beware, Enchanted Ground!
As weariness assailed each limb,
I caught a sound, though scarcely dim,
Blest Voice I recognised;
‘Come stand, lean hard upon my arm
Let not this present pressing harm
O’erpower you with its guise.
Many a one slept here and found
The danger of Enchanted Ground.’
I stumbled to my feet, aghast
That such sleep might have been my last!
I grasped His outstretched Hand.
Together, at His chosen pace,
We progressed through the misted waste
And left the curse-d land.
Enchanted? no, its spell of charm
Entices with deep devious harm.
A new day dawned, sun’s flaming sphere
Shone brightly on fresh morning clear,
The air again was pure.
Birds sang, flowers grew, refreshment sweet
Lay in abundance at my feet
With this assurance sure:
His portion for each day is best -
In toil, in fight, in work, in rest.
