Driven away,
Steered to the very brink of frail insanity
Their whipping tongues showed her no pity
Whirlwind words,
Twist and twirl
Out of control, always the same pattern it seems,
Numbers magnified, overwhelming
Fierce waves crash,
A vicious cycle,
Where crashing tides meet sinking sand 'mid ebb and flow,
Five times the trouble, going on six
Abandoned feast,
Bare cupboards,
Empty pitchers sail a scathing brine of past regret,
So much water, so little to drink
Thirsty, she
Warily
Swims through schools of rumor mongers, bottom feeders
Scrounging ocean floors for bittersweet
Solo she
Navigates
Past oil spills, jet streams teeming with sharp rocks,
And blinding ripples of blistering heat
On dry land,
Exhausted,
She finally arrives at much-desired well,
With no good to give, no wish to live
All she wants
Is to survive,
To make it through just one more day before she dies
But alas, a strange man blocks her way
Splintered mast,
Plans are dashed,
For right away he asks to drain the last drop from
Her less-than-overflowing cup
"But I have
Nothing left,"
She protests, then gasps. For he says he'll fill her jug.
His request has turned into an offer
New wineskins
Wait, for he
Has stirred her curiosity, because she knows
The well is deep, he has no bucket
Yet his lips
Exude fresh truth,
A depth of understanding she can't fathom
Can this be the Christ, the promised Messiah?
Thirst quenched, she
Dives right in,
Lets down her net and automatically
Takes in quite a catch of shipwrecked men
No evangelism class could teach it better!
