caught shining beams of light from Heaven.
Three times each day a kneeling form
leant on the sill with weeping riven,
till tears turned to thankful praise
and watchers whispered ‘See, he prays.’
Even the roar of waiting beasts
could not deter communion
between an old man, knelt in prayer,
whose prior claim - close union
with God - was more than life itself,
far more than reputation, health.
The wide-flung window opened wide
mirrored a life transparently
lived in a heathen distant land
where corruption ruled incessantly.
One God-filled life of purity,
like open book or crystal gem,
became a strong dividing force,
a visible phenomenon:
To some, from open window poured
a stinking stench, the smell of death,
whilst others caught a fragrance sweet
of saving truth, life-giving breath.
Lord, help me daily turn the key,
open the window, fling it wide,
my life become an open page
that you can write, Life-giving Scribe.

Daniel 6 –
(Remember, even lions wild
caught something of the breath of Heaven
and recognised their Maker’s touch
upon the life that shared their den.)
