On my bedroom wall
And in my pocket
Teenager
Devoted to the Lord
Attended church
Bible study
Youth camp
Prayer meetings
University and graduate school
Studied religion
Surely was becoming
Expert in faith
I had knowledge
I was special
Adult
Worked for church
For a long time
Truth be told
30 years
Had the answers
Neatly packaged
Well proclaimed
Powerfully delivered
Admired
Praised
Honored
Satisfied
One marriage
One divorce
Five deaths
Serious illness
Depression
Worldly possessions
All lost in fire
Sorrow
Heartbreak
Pain
Anxiety
Numbness
Where now was God
Who used to be
On my wall
In my pocket
In my brilliant mind
On my favored tongue?
I have found Him
All over again
In frailty
In brokenness
In new openness
With new eyes and ears
As a beginner
God is everywhere
In places I never looked before
In persons never noticed
In darkness as in light
In silence as in joy-filled sound
In suffering and in acceptance
In simplicity
In listening, and not talking so much
In not-knowing, and in faith and wonder
I am in awe
Humbled
I know Love
And am
Happy to be
Expert no longer
Simply
Christian
Believer
Christ-follower
Forever
