The problem with brothers
Is they’re built with a glitch;
In one branch of the brain
God flipped off their switch.

They were taught “Mind your manners”
Since the day they turned two,
But they like making noises;
They’re walking kazoos.

One problem with brothers
Is their trails left behind;
Sprayed sprinkles from tinkles
Prove they’re still unrefined.

Used tissues are scattered,
And socks grace the room
With odors so lethal,
Bugs die from the fumes.

They sneeze and they tease,
Burp, grunt, sing, and snore,
Fight for the last donut,
And always want more.

My brothers are Martians
In various sizes.
Don’t be fooled by their charm
And humble disguises.

Should pencils be arrows?
Whipped cream cans to shoot?
Should they aim at my nose?
Or juggle the fruit?

See—they lack common sense,
And make goofy faces
So I’ll laugh at the altar
And all solemn places.

The problem with brothers
Is they’re not always bad;
I can’t always blame them
For making me mad.

So I have to admit…
They can come in handy
For reaching top shelves where
Mom hides her candy.

Peculiar by nature,
They need lots of training,
But with some correction
Could be entertaining.

Without my four brothers
I’d miss all of the noise
I guess that’s my “normal”—
I’ve grown up with boys.

Sometimes I am thankful
When I see how they care;
As the sun carves through clouds,
They’ll always be there.

When we gather together
At the end of each day,
If I’m sick or in pain,
They remember to pray.

The truth is I’m blessed
And shouldn’t complain—
They could be four monsters
If God turned on their brains!

I love this piece. It had me chuckling all the way through. I was kind of expecting at the end to learn that the brothers were all grown-up but still used pencils as arrows and squirted whip cream everywhere! Siblings can be a pain for sure but they are (in most cases) the only people in your life who are there from cradle to grave and that can be a beautiful blessing indeed. This was a delightful read and left me with a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

Being the only girl sibling with four brothers, I totally get this, even after many years. I can even see the long-term blessedness of having them, though I still find it hard to admit. lol Good writing.
