The hiss of whispers and rumbling growls bounce off the chamber walls. The floor seems to move like bubbling tar. Small pinpoints of deep red and orange dot the blackness; dark eyes reflecting the far away glow. Suddenly a flash shatters the darkness for a moment and is gone. A large dark form stands, silhouetted against the glow.
Silence falls immediately. The orange pinpoints turn as one toward the figure.
“Who is responsible for this?” His voice is deep, rasping with anger. “Commanders, step forward!” The mass moves and five dark forms step out, cowering before the looming figure.
“Five of you! Five battalions and you can’t stop one family from moving into our territory? Just one family! And now we face an outbreak of immense proportions.”
One of the commanders stepps closer, clearing his throat, speaking in a quivering voice, “Sir, the battalion from the other city was responsible to stop them. They let these people through the lines. We cannot be blamed.”
A deep growl, a blinding flash and the commander shrivels into a pile of dark ashes.
“Anyone else want to make excuses?” The thunderous voice echoes off the walls. Nothing moves. “I didn’t think so,” his laugh is a screech, claws scrapping down a blackboard. “Let me tell you what we are facing here. This man is the new p..p..pastor,” he spits the word out. “His wife will be teaching in the elementary school, the son will attend the middle school, the daughter the high school. They are all committed to Him and to changing this town. They will infect everything. They must be stopped!”
A voice sounded out from the midst of the crowd, “Sir, they are all surrounded day and night by the shining ones. We cannot get to them.”
“Excusessss!” The hiss ended with a searing crackle and a puff of smoke rose from the crowd.
“Find a way! Why hasn’t someone put a virus in their computer? Is that so hard? Can the shining ones stop that?” A low rumble rolled through the dark mass. Of course the shining ones can stop it if they find it. And they will. Either way it means a battle and a battle with the shining ones usually ends badly for them.
The black figure growls, “These people have been communicating by email with the town already. The woman has organized prayer groups with the women. The man has had web meetings with the men. People we had long ago rendered worthless are suddenly energized to work for‘the kingdom'.” He said the last with derision but there was a touch of fear behind the mocking tone.
“His Eminence will not stand for us losing this town. Do you understand?! You think just one family couldn’t possibly spread the news of release so quickly? Couldn’t possibly make a difference? You are WRONG!! They aren’t even here yet and people are talking and praying and inviting others. It is a disease,” he shrieks. “And it is spreading as we stand here. It is an outbreak we must contain and destroy!”
The black mass murmurs in agreement as the large figure continues, his voice heightening in urgency. “We must do this! We won this town long ago and we won’t let go now. Bring out all our weapons. Use everything. Here are your orders:
*First battalion, concentrate on the high school. Get one of our boys to distract the daughter. That is her weakness.
*Second battalion, you have the boy in middle school. Simple enough. They are so easy to confuse at that age, so weak.
*Third battalion, the woman is your responsibility. She will be so busy worrying about her children she won’t have time for prayer meetings and Bible studies. Worry - such an effective technique.
*I will personally take care of the man.
*The rest of you watch the town. Get some more bars open, introduce a new adult-only movie channel and make sure it’s free. Stop this outbreak before it spreads further!! To battle!”
The legion of powerful, shining figures surrounding the mouth of the cave drew their swords.
