Just to have all your efforts backfire?
I had such occur with my neighbour—
Here’s my version of how it transpired.
‘Hey John, could you come here a minute’
Shouted Mary from over the fence,
‘It’s my attic, I think something’s in it,
Could you check, it’s too awkward for Vince.’
I got out my ladder and flashlight,
Like the cavalry into the fray
Charged to rescue a damsel in plight—
Should have taken some time to survey!!
With gusto I crawled through the roof-space,
Mighty hero undaunted by fear,
Wiped the sweat and the dust from my face—
‘W-what’s that s-sound in the c-corner I hear’?
A mad rushing noise sent me flying—
Something whizzed by my face like a flash—
A split second later I’m lying
On the sitting room floor midst the trash.
A gaping great hole in the ceiling
Marked the spot where I’d taken my dive,
By my side the old couple kneeling
Felt my pulse—Was I dead or alive?
My pride was severely deflated
Though my body was mostly intact,
My handyman role was negated
By a possum, a bird or a bat.
A minute turned into a contract
Took long hours of hard work to repair—
Now my neighbours and I have a pact—
If there’s noise in the roof leave it there!
