Than anyone I know,
Had planned on going shopping, and
He wanted us to go.
Now we were newly married and
Were poor as we could be.
We planned to spend no money then;
On that we did agree.
We climbed into the car with him
And headed into town.
We parked and walked beside the shops,
Just looking all around.
One clothing store was having sales;
So Dad went in and shopped.
As he was looking through the racks,
He, all at once, just stopped.
“Huh! Look at this nice suit I found,”
Said Dad with twinkling eyes,
“It only costs five dollars here;
I’ve really found a prize.”
He said to my new husband then,
“You really ought to buy it.
I’m guessing it’s a perfect fit.
Just take it back and try it.”
“Huh, what’d you say?” my hubby said,
“A suit for just five dollars?
I bet it doesn’t every have
Two sleeves, a front, or collar.”
And when Dad held it up to see,
I wasn’t much impressed.
“It doesn’t look so good to me,”
I wanted to protest.
The color was a dingy gray,
But all the parts were there.
It was as ugly of a suit
As I’d seen anywhere.
To please my Dad, we bought that suit,
Our true thoughts not revealing.
We loved him, and he was so pleased--
We couldn’t hurt his feelings.
We took it home and found a place
Where we could safely store it.
We kept it for a lot of years;
My husband never wore it…Huh!
