"Those are the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights."
"Wow. It's so pretty! What are the Are.. Awa... Northern Lights for?"
Momma polar bear chuckled. "Well, there are lots of stories about the Lights. Some people think it's the spirits of animals who have died. Some think it's children's spirits, and some think it's people's spirits who are playing ball with a walrus head."
"That's silly, Momma."
"You may think it's silly, but that's what some people think causes the Lights. But we polar bears know better."
"Really? Then what are they for?"
"I think the Creator just wanted to show some creativity. I think He just made it so we can enjoy it."
"Because the Creator likes it when we enjoy His creation, right Momma?"
"That's right, Snowy. Sometimes I like to think that God is writing messages to us in the Lights."
Snowy laughed. "You're funny Mommy. God doesn't write things in the sky."
"Well, not really. But I do think he talks to us in different ways, and that the Lights can be one of those ways."
"Really? How can God talk to us through the Lights?" Snowy asked.
"Well Son, it's a reminder that God is here with us, even on these cold dark nights. Do you ever get scared when you wake up in the middle of the night and you can't see and you hear the Lights crackling?"
Snowy nodded his furry head.
"Well, you can look up at the Lights and remember that God is with you. Think of the Lights as a big blanket, and God is wrapping you up in His love."
"I like that, Momma. And the crackling can be like Him saying 'I love you,' right?"
"I never thought of it like that, Snowy. But I like that. Yes. The crackling is like God telling us He loves us."
"Why are the Lights different colors, Momma?"
"Because the colors remind us that God loves us no matter what color your fur is. Even when your face is all dirty after eating berries, God still loves you."
"And why do they move?"
"Well, that's kind of like God's spirit moving among us."
Snowy continued to look up at the sky in silence, staring at the ever-changing light show. "You know what, Momma?"
"What, Snowy?"
"I think you're even more beautifuler than the Lights."
"I think you are too, Snowy. Let's go back to bed."
The two bears lumbered back to the den, and settled in for the night.
"Good night, Momma. Good night Daddy." Snowy looked out to the great Lights. "Good night, God. I love You. See You tomorrow night." Snowy's breathing grew deep, as he drifted off to sleep, remembering how God speaks to us everywhere. Even in the sky.
