"Uh, Boss, why is Master jumping around and yelling 'Ouch!' every few seconds?" Mosquito inquired.
"It's those dastardly kids. They're singing 'That Song' again," Sniper explained.
"What song?"
"You know."
"No, I don't. If I knew, I wouldn't be asking."
"Well, why don't you take a look and find out for yourself? Sniper prodded
Mosquito stained as he listened. "Oh! I love that song!" Mosquito started stamping his foot and clapping his hands like he was at a good ol' fashioned hoedown. "And if the devil doesn't like it he can sit on a tack. Ouch! Sit on a tack. Ouch! Sit on a...." His voice trailed off as he noticed Deceiver and Sniper giving him the evil eye. Mosquito chuckled sheepishly. "Sorry."
Sniper pointed a reprimanding finger at Mosquito. "Don't you ever sing that song again. Ever. Master doesn't like it."
"But why?"
"Oh, my little demon. You have a lot to learn. Certainly by now you know the dangers of church. It goes completely against The Cause."
"Well, yeah, but those little kids don't believe all that stuff, do they?" Mosquito reasoned
"They're four."
"Oh. Good point. But if they are so young, certainly they will grow up to understand the absurdity of what the church teaches. I mean, I did."
"Yes, but you were a conquest. We prefer the 'easy targets,' so to speak."
"I'm not sure I get it," Mosquito confessed. "Why does it matter if they go to Sunday School?" Sniper and Master cringed at the term. "Sorry. Why does it matter if they go when they are young?"
"Who do you think takes them to church?"
"Their parents."
"Exactly. It is much harder to grab them when they are brought up in the church. It's ingrained into them, and they begin to see how it can benefit them. Even we can't deny what they teach is true. It's our job to blind them. And it's much easier to blind them if they've never seen in the first place."
"What are those kids doing now?" Mosquito inquired
Sniper shuddered. "Listening to the one story that is our complete and utter downfall."
"You mean?" Mosquito gasped in horror.
"Yes. The story of Jesus' death and resurrection and of Him conquering us once and for all."
Deceiver exploded in a fit of rage. "Never use the Enemy's proper name. It is not tolerated here. You, Sniper, of all my demons should know that."
"I... I... I'm sss... sss... sorry Master," Sniper stuttered. "It must have been a momentary lack of judgment."
At that moment the very foundations of the dwelling shook. Sniper and Mosquito turned their attention back to the children. "Oh no," Sniper replied. "We've lost another. Look. Over their in the corner. Little Connie Otter just submitted to the Enemy's call. And if they are sincere at that young age, it's no use."
"Why?" Mosquito innocently asked.
"Because..." Sniper glanced around to make sure Deceiver wasn't listening. 'No one can snatch them out of His hand.' Master doesn't like me quoting from the Book, but even he cannot deny the truth for long."
Mosquito wasn't listening. "Oh! They're singing again! 'And if the devil doesn't like it he can sit on a..." He could feel Sniper's eyes boring into him. "What?" He replied innocently.
Sniper hung his head in disgust. "You'll never learn."

I couldn’t quite work out whether the slapstick among the devils was deliberate and this spoiled the story for me. At one level they were lecturing one another on serious issues of conversion and deception. But at the same time they acted like they belonged in a Laurel and Hardy movie (hey, does that really show my age?)
