A crisp, white background yawns with conspicuous gaps, exposing underlying splotches of rough, textured-looking gray. A row of black dancing dots snakes to the left until they disappear. Two wide shadowy bands cut through the center, slicing even, vertical strips. Numerous pin-sized lines swirl in confused circles to the right before they prance out of sight.
The artist is satisfied, and yet wonders: what about color? What if creative license - a vibrant touch of brilliance - decides to pounce out of nowhere with a splash of, say, bright grass green? No, of course … this is not the time for color. That will be later.
He gazes at his work and reasons with himself. Look how the black, gray and white foster quiet serenity - a mood of visionary reflection. Perfect! But … perhaps just a dab, a wide sweeping stroke, a flourish here and there, would be nice?
And so with feathery swirls of the artist’s hand the still-wet background spreads – almost like foamy, retreating sea spray. Dots and lines remain visible but seem softer, less distracting. The eye follows the two wide bands instead.
Yes … follows them where, the artist muses? To a place where an observer could be led to discover something beyond the white and gray? Beyond the black dots and tiny lines? Beyond … earthly reality?
I turn from the blustery, snow-swept road with its tire treads; its rabbit and bird tracks. A patch of dry asphalt at the end of my driveway peeks from beneath matted snow right where I turn and head toward my snow-capped house with the belching chimney. I have been regenerated and refocused by a short walk along a country road showcasing the winter artistry of the Maker.
