A rainbow sea of humanity
Huddled in shelters, treasuring life.
What is the face of hope?
A tear-stained face lifting a candle
To dispel the darkness – one small light
In a world reduced to mud.
What is the character of hope?
Hope is -
The smile of a child
Cradled safe in a mother’s arms,
A gentle whisper of wind
Drying up the sea soaked land,
The hand of a stranger
Offering food and water,
The sanctuary given
To the homeless in place after place.
Hope is -
The pledge to rebuild,
Heal and renew, working shoulder to shoulder,
Knowing that the long night
Will pass and give way to a new dawn.
Hope is -
The next breath, the next moment,
A silent prayer when all seems lost.
It shines through grief and pain and
Utter despair like the sun shouting its
Promise through the storm clouds
Of life – announcing its presence
Even when it appears not to be there,
It is. Hope.
