He had the finer things in life. A nice home, an over-flowing pantry, soft bedding, and an ability to dart between moving cars without getting hit. He even had it good with the ladies, or so he thought. In reality, they looked at him with pity, but played the game because he always seemed to get the most acorns of any of his peers, and the best of them, too. If they were nice to him, perhaps they could share in his wealth. They used Sammy because of what he could do for them. Deep down, Sammy knew that, but it didn't seem to matter.
As long as he got what he wanted, Sammy was happy. What Sammy cared about was Sammy. His theme song was the country hit, "It's All About Me." While he had no friends, he enjoyed the status of being the big man around town. He was wealthy, he was powerful, he was lonely.
This past winter hit hard. Sammy was approached by many in the community to see if he would share his abundance, but Sammy reasoned that if he gave away his goodies, then he'd have nothing left for himself. If he gave up all his acorns, he'd go hungry, and besides, he didn't just want people coming to him for what he could do for them. He had to get something in return, so he turned down all comers.
One by one, the others stopped coming. The harsh winter continued, but Sammy's needs were taken care of. Once spring arrived, he'd figure out how to get everyone to stop being mad at him for not sharing. He'd also find a way to fix it with the ladies, but for now, he was content.
The weather finally broke, and Sammy welcomed the newness of spring. When he ventured out, it became evident pretty quickly why his visitors had stopped coming. Because he had all the acorns and wouldn't share, everyone around town either died from their lack or moved away.
It didn't matter, for after all, Sammy still had Sammy, even though it might make for long days all alone in his nut house.
