I used to hate hair-cuts!
Not long after the end of the Second World War, I was put on a bus by my Mum to go up for my monthly trim to the Dorset hill-top town of Shaftesbury.
Tom Oliver, having cycled up the steep hill from Motcombe, would set to work in his barber shop in a small room at the back of Bridles sweet shop.
I sat down and waited my turn. Then, in response to Tom’s grunt, I would get up into his special high chair for kids and shudder as he wrapped a hairy cloth round me and grunted again.
Tom never seemed able to speak one word clearly, so I just had to respond to his moving my head around as he needed. Then, having finished, he would grunt for me to get out of the chair and then grunt for me to pay him.
I stuffed my hand into the pocket of my shorts and handed him the little coin Mum had given me.
Sixpence!
In those days, long before UK decimalisation, that was a tanner.
Today, I go down town and get a haircut.
Twelve pounds!
Wow!
That is 482 times my little childhood tanner!
And my head is about the same size, I think.
No inflation there!
