The text read: ‘brunch at my house, Tuesday at 10:00. You know what to bring - LOL’
Tuesday arrived. Beth brought a fruit salad. Sherry made muffins. Sue shared bagels, and Carol supplied juice. I prepared a breakfast casserole.
Brunch was served.
The best part of this time together was it gave the girls a chance to catch up and talk about the things that were on their heart. Family. Kids. Ministry. Struggles. I loved to hear their interaction as they tried to encourage one another. They would often look to me and ask “Marilyn, what do you think? How would you solve this problem?”
As I shared my thoughts with them, they listened with rapt attention. Having lived eighty years of life, I could share with them how God had worked things out for me, and he would do the same for them. What a joy to speak into the heart of these gals. Age was not a barrier in this group. We learned well from each other.
Once our brunch was over, we cleared the table and got ready for our craft-of-the-morning project. This month we were going to decorate cupcakes. Each gal brought a dozen unfrosted cupcakes. Sherry, who was a professional baker, was going to be our teacher for the morning. She had furnished all the frosting (in various colors) sprinkles, and frosting decorating syringes.
We were ready for fun.
“Okay, ladies, this is what we will do,” said Sherry. “Take your syringe and fill it with frosting. I am going to teach you how to make some roses.”
“Seriously?” Questioned Beth. “Those look hard to make.”
“Not really. Actually they are quite easy. Let’s begin.”
And with that, Sherry delicately began to make a pink rose while the rest of us watched carefully, using our syringe to copy what she was doing. Many roses of various colors lay before us. All looking different; but we made them. They were our creation.
After frosting our cupcakes with white frosting, we added our colorful roses. If you ask me, they did turn out quite nice and looked very pretty. Although Sherry’s looked the most professional! (I wonder why?)
“What else can you teach us?” Sue was curious to know.
“How about some fancy piping to add to your cupcake.”
“Oh, I like that,” replied Carol. “My boys are going to love eating these with all this yummy frosting on them. Of course, they will probably just lick off the frosting and forget the cupcake,” chuckled Carol.
An hour later 60 cupcakes were decorated and ready to take home to their family.
Our time together is very special to each of us. It is a time when these gals can find rest and friendship on common ground. It is a time when laughter is abundant; sometimes tears may fall. It is a safe place to share, knowing what is talked about stays within our group. It is a time when God shows up in amazing ways.
Of all the ministries God has given to me, this is the one I enjoy the most. I have become their “mother” (as they call me) and I love it.
Two verses come to mind when I think of my involvement with these young women.
“Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” - Colossians 3:17
“These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God.” Titus 2:4-5
I consider it a privilege to be pouring life and godliness into these young women. That God would choose to use me….
I just shake my head and smile.
