Tap! Tap!
I looked up suddenly from the book I was reading.
A man stood by my car door. I pulled the window down.
“Mr Puckett?”
“Yes.”
“You’d better get down to the hospital quickly.”
Phew!
Half an hour earlier I’d dropped my darling wife Veronica off for yet another appointment about some issue with her breast. For over three months she’d been for lots of tests, scans, biopsies etc. And over and over again she’d been told, “We’re 99% sure everything’s OK.”
Getting to the doctor’s room, I slumped into a chair.
“I’m sorry to tell you, but your wife has cancer.”
I couldn’t have heard anything worse.
Back in the 1950s soon after I came home from two years of National Service, my mother’s sister suddenly died from cancer. Ever since then the ‘C word’ had been something I avoided at any cost.
Now, here it is in my lovely wife!
Mr Payne handed us over to one of the nurses.
My love went through all the medical preparations for her mastectomy.
Then, after her operation, there were plenty of other issues which severely tested her faith in the Lord and tested my faith also. A month of radiotherapy. Then chemotherapy. Then check-ups.
On one hospital visit, I ventured to ask one of the doctors, “What are her prospects”?
“Five years at the most!”
Five years at the most!
Flabbergasted!
To say the least.
I kept saying to myself over and over again.
‘Five years at the most.’
‘Five years at the most.’
Oh, dear, oh dear, Lord.
What can we do?
Well, a few days later I shared the doctor’s prediction with one of the men at the fellowship we belonged to. They had been praying so much for us both.
So what was this brother’s advice?
What was his opinion?
Did he have any suggestions about what we should do?
Colin simply said, “Man’s prognosis is not the same as God’s.”
“Man’s prognosis is not the same as God’s.”
Never heard that before.
“Five years at the most!”
So what was going to happen?
What was God’s prognosis?
Five years?
No!
Twenty-eight years!
Wonderfully and miraculously God gave us another 28 years together!
In June last year, 2024, two days after our 60th wedding anniversary, the Lord took my sweetheart, Ronnie, to be with himself.
Praise the Lord for his beautiful prognosis!
