Your neck cranes to try to take in the size of him. At nine foot six he is chest, head and shoulders above you and all the other soldiers surrounding him. His helmet is Assyrian in style and weighs in at thirty pounds. It is, to all intents and purposes, a bucket made of solid bronze. His breastplate, a scaled coat of chain mail owes its design to that of the Egyptians. At one hundred and fifty pounds it is equivalent in weight to strapping a soldier to your chest. Aegean leg pads fashioned out of solid, sculpted, burnished metal glint in the early morning. Add to this a massive spear equivalent in weight to twenty modern javelins. In the other hand an Eastern scimitar; a sword so magnificent that people declare that there is none like it; so sharp it is capable of separating your head from your body with one gentle, yet swift swipe.

Goliath rises with the dawn, steps out from his camp and shouts across the valley known as the ‘Boundary of Blood’. He offers a one-on-one armed combat with any person brave enough to fight him.

Would you rise to the challenge of this undefeated champion, a warrior yet to find his match? Would you reject the offer of the royal armour bearer? Would you settle for a sling and five smooth stones? Would you position yourself in front of your troops? Would you plant your feet firmly in the desert sand and then stand some more? Would you eye up your foe remembering the times that you’ve conquered lions and bears? Would you ignore a crowd full of critics and their cries? Would you silence a head full of whispered lies? Would you run out to meet your enemy? Would you place a perfectly polished pebble in its place and slowly and carefully, powerfully and prayerfully swing the sling around and around your head? Would you aim straight between the eyes? Would you boldly declare that the battle belongs to the Lord? Well, would you?
