So, on the second Monday of August 1989 we loaded up the car with everything we would need. Bit of extra clothing as it was probably cooler up on the Moor, food, and drinks. And of course, the little gas cylinder stove on which we could heat the kettle to make a cup of tea.
So, off we went - Langport, Bridgwater, the Quantock Hills (from where we could see Wales), and then Exmoor. It wasn’t as big as Dartmoor, but still lots of wild, open, hilly land. So lovely to enjoy God’s creation largely unspoilt.
We stopped at Nutscale reservoir for our ‘Feast’. Delicious.
My wife and I enjoyed a time of relaxation in the car, while our children went off exploring the sprawling lakeside ups and downs.
I was wonderfully dozing a while later. Suddenly, a voice, “Oh, I’d love a cup of tea!”
Yes, of course! I would too!
Out of the car I got. Opened up the boot. Got the little gas stove in its safe place, filled the kettle with the water we’d brought.
AND!
Calamity!
One thing we’d failed to bring.
Matches!
Calamity indeed!
No cuppa!
