I am missing my mom so much this morning. Grief is so strange. It’s been almost a year since she died, and still I can be going along just “fine” when wham! Something or someone reminds me of her. Reminds me that I no longer have access to her wisdom or her hugs. Reminds me that there’s a piece of my heart missing.

I strap on my tennis shoes, nestle my earbuds in place, and turn up my favorite worship music before heading outside. Running clears my mind. It allows me to be totally alone; I don’t have to answer to anyone about the tears streaming down my face. It’s really just me and God.

This morning my feet take me on a different path. I don’t question it too much - I’m too lost in my head and my music. When I pause to take a breath, I find myself overlooking a view I’ve seen so many times before. But today it looks different.

The way the sun is capturing every glistening dew drop on the branches is so beautiful - the woods are sparkling. The changing colors of the leaves all around me look like a painting. The clouds in the sky are the fluffy white ones that we dream of floating on as little children. The air is crisp and fresh - it feels wonderful as it fills my lungs.

My heart swells within my rib cage. As I sing the lyrics of my favorite song out loud, my arms unconsciously raise to the sky in praise. He is with me, and my worship is so pure it almost takes my breath away. My heart is soothed, and it is well with my soul.
