You didn’t know about me
I used to be a peacekeeper

Affray was my middle ground
Battleground, the backlash of
Contention
Dissension, descent into depravity
Encounters with proclivity
Frays fracas forcing fighting
Goading punching kicking biting
Hecklers and hasslers
Intolerance
Just
Kept on raising
Leviathans of race and creed
Meeting face to face
Never listening as
Opinion battled opinion
Placards punching holes in
Quarrels
Run-ins with ruckus and riots
Set-to of struggles and strife
The turbulent troubles
Underlining, underpinning a life of
Violent disorder
While wars waged
Xenophobics raged
Youths aged amid the
Zap and zoom of missiles

One thing
you need to know about me
I was a peacekeeper a minesweeper
a timekeeper a wicketkeeper a scorekeeper

I was a peacekeeper
standing toe to toe with confusion
raising a baton to quell rowdy riots
holding see through shields high
deflecting objects of putrid hatred
I was a peacekeeper

A smoke screen swirled around me
wondered how did I ever end up here
the clamour faded
and curls of whispering smoke
settled on the ground
I removed all that I once clad myself in
taking off my dark blue claustrophobic helmet
body armour and heavy heavy stab proof vest
my shin pads, knee pads, elbow pads, gloves
placing them back into the bag on top of
a riot shield and a baton

Then slowly and carefully
boldly and prayerfully
buckling up the belt of truth
strapping on the breastplate of righteousness
slipping on the gospel shoes in readiness
salvation’s helmet in all its steadiness
sword of the Spirit in my hand
stepping up stepping out
stepping in
taking a stand
a PEACEMAKER
at last
