They had seen numerous doctors and specialists over the past five years. Everything always checked out normal for both of them; there was no medical reason they couldn’t conceive. Maybe God just didn’t think they would be good parents, Myrna thought to herself. Still, she could not comprehend why He would put this painfully deep desire in her heart if He had no intention to fill it.
On the other side of town, Susan was also choking back tears. How could she have let this happen again! Her flesh was so weak! Steve would have the same reaction Bill had - he would be angry and say he wasn’t ready to be a father. Susan would’ve married either one of them. All she had ever wanted, for as long as she could remember, was to have a bunch of babies with a man who loved her.
Susan mourned the loss of that dream when she was just 17 and pregnant with her first child. Now she was mourning her obvious failure as an adult. She knew neither of these men really loved her, and the thought of raising another child on her own seemed impossible.
Myrna had a friend, Debbie, who had walked through the sadness of infertility with her during these last two years. Debbie and her husband were also unable to conceive, and had adopted three children. Debbie had occasionally and gently asked her friend if she would consider adoption. But Myrna always insisted she wanted the “whole” experience; she wanted to carry a child, give birth, nurse her baby, “all of it”.
Debbie was very involved with the pro-life movement. She often asked Myrna to come to a Planned Parenthood site with her - just to hold up a sign that showed the patrons that maybe there was another way. Myrna always declined, but one day, Debbie caught her in a vulnerable moment, and she agreed to go.
What Myrna saw from the sidewalks surrounding the large brick building, changed her. The women entering the building were so young! And they looked so scared! Myrna had always assumed any woman who would have an abortion was pure evil; after all, she would do anything to be in their shoes! She could never imagine destroying what God had miraculously put in her womb!
But it was clear that these girls (most of them were not yet women) were utterly despondent; and more often than not, completely alone. Myrna became so lost in her angst and her thoughts, that she accidentally almost tripped one of the patrons.
“Oh! My goodness! I am so sorry!”
The girl barely looked at her; almost as if she felt she deserved to be tripped.
”Really. I am very sorry,” Myrna repeated as she lightly touched the girl’s arm.
But again, the girl ignored her; she had tunnel vision on the front door. Something made Myrna pursue the girl.
“Excuse me…is there anything I can do…to help you?” she timidly asked. At this the girl turned and looked at Myrna.
“Not unless you know someone who wants a baby,” she said bitterly.
Myrna stood stunned. And as the Holy Spirit’s words seemed to tumble from her mouth, she felt like she was watching, rather than partaking in, the conversation.
”Maybe she did….” she was saying, “know someone who wants a baby…can I buy you lunch and we can talk about it,” she heard herself continue.
Susan was saying “Today? You want to take me to lunch right now?” as Myrna was coming back to her senses.
“Yes.” Myrna agreed. “Today.”
