I stand silently in sharp suit and smart tie. All the evidence being presented is true, specifiable, verifiable, undeniable. This is not my first offence. The brown oak balustrade in front of me is polished smooth, worn down by hands that have gripped it tightly. The brass fittings stained and tarnished with sweat and tears from crimes I’ve committed over many years. My chargesheet accuses me of all my crimes. Line after line, time after time. I am guilty as charged. Deserving of death. It is intense and in suspense I wait for the sentence. For all have sinned and fallen short and in a sense I get it. If only I could forget it, start again, re-commence, provide some recompense for those that I hurt. For those that I incense.
The cross
He hangs quietly, gambled garments removed and distributed. All evidence is false, unreliable. He offers up no defence. Bruising him, abusing him, accusing him. The crowds by now both judge and jury, finding him guilty of crimes he has not committed. No hope of being acquitted. Unremitting he is being sentenced to death. The slice of tree behind him is unpolished, roughly fashioned into shape. Distorted and contorted hands held in place by iron nails mottled with blood and sweat. His charge sheet pinned above him. Painfully, slowly, painfully slowly all life drains away and with one thrusted spear. Justice has been executed.
The judge
He sits solemnly his robes flowing. Knowing I am guilty he asks me to rise. I stand before him. My gaze lowers and I find myself staring at the wooden floor. Building up the courage to look I glimpse his face. Compassion furrows his brow, grace softens his eyes, leniency tempers his expression. He does not speak. He lets out a single breath. The breadth and depth of quiet is immense, the silence incredibly intense. There is no judgment here. Holding out his hands I see the holes where nails once held him. I witness the wound in his side where mercy still flows and once again my cup is full to overflowing. My liberty at his expense.
