In west Wales we once lived not far from a high hill and one spring morning I was walking along the lane that climbed up its steep slopes.
A big field of lovely grass beside the lane was being grazed by many sheep. They looked so contented. Life was good.
As I got closer, ‘Hey, what’s that?’
One sheep was clearly having a problem. It was struggling.
When I got closer I could see its head was stuck in the sheep fencing net.
Having pushed its head through the square hole its big ears prevented it from getting its head back out again. Climbing up onto the field bank, I eventually managed to get it free, but it didn’t say ‘Thank you’.
So, with all that lovely easy-to-nibble fresh spring grass in the field, why ever did she stuff her head in such a tight hole?
Simple answer: ‘The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.’
Same old story down through the ages.
And Christians are not immune to such desires and temptations.
Too easily something attracts us when Jesus has already given us all we need.
Thankfully, the fence stopped the sheep from getting lost on the huge hill.
Thankfully, Jesus never lets his sheep completely escape.
