When I asked Dad to come to the field with me to pick some rushes and then show me how to plait them, Mum was crying.
It was early in the Second World War and Dad was home on leave.
Years later I could look back and understand Mum’s tears.
Dad was home for a short time and no doubt he’d told her he was being sent abroad. How, where, and when, he didn’t know.
Uncertainty for both of them. Would he ever come home? How long would he be away? What dangers would he have to face? And countless other questions, no doubt.
Well, thank the Lord, he did come home a few years later safe and sound.
Less than ten years after that, I was doing my two years UK National Service duty in the Royal Air Force. After a few months, I came home on leave and told Mum and Dad I was being sent thousands of miles away to the Far East - Malaya, where I would be working on aircraft as part of the fight against the communist insurgents.
It wasn’t a pleasant prospect.
However, early in 1957 I was back in my precious Dorset countryside, reunited in a special way with my family and friends.
I hoped I’d never have to leave them again.
Thank the Lord He never goes on leave!
“I will never leave you!” He said.
