It didn’t work the first time
It didn’t work the second
Time, time, again, the same old tale
He didn’t have it in him.
Try as he might, try as he might
It didn’t work or last.
The next day once more back again
Into the same old errors.
Growing up, he tried a church
Communion 8 a.m.
It eased his conscience for a while
Allowed his Sunday fishing.
A teenager, he read God’s word
He heard a radio preacher.
He changed a little bit ‘tis true
Again, it never lasted.
To Pentecostal church he went
They thought he had salvation
Because he prayed and took some part
And also took communion.
But no-one saw his sad pretence
His false religious failure.
How could they know his inner soul?
His strivings to be better?
“Oh, none of this will ever do
I never will get good,
No matter how much I reform.
I might as well give up.”
Then, praise the Lord, one winter’s day
While driving down the road
He heard a voice, “You can’t fool God!”
A mighty declaration.
Those words hit hard his trembling heart.
The truth struck strongly home.
No more pretence, no more amends,
“You must be born again!”
(That was me!)

To some extent or other we've all tried to manage salvation our own way.
But we must be born again.
That's me too.
