My husband farmed with his dad and we planned on making this our life-long career. We had two little boys we were raising and a farm is a great place to raise children. However, during the winter of 1968 my husband became restless with the idea of farming forever. He was sensing a “call from God” to go into full-time ministry. After talking with his dad and our pastor, it was decided he would give up life on the farm and begin his education in Christian ministry. I agreed with his decision wholeheartedly.
I was a fairly new believer, having received Christ into my life in 1959. I was still growing in my walk with Jesus and in my knowledge of the Word. One thing about being a Christian that brought me joy; I loved sharing Jesus with people.
My attempts to share the Gospel story were feeble, to say the least. I did my best but had few results.
That is, until God plopped me into the PCW Department at Moody, outside the door of C. Sumner Wemp.
I loved sitting at his desk as he told his amazing stories of how he led someone to Jesus “just this morning”. He was at a gas station getting gas for his car and began talking with the attendant. Before he left, the attendant prayed to receive Jesus as their Savior.
Wow! I wanted that kind of response.
He told me how he used Gospel Tracts to reach people. He had clever ways to use them, including using them as a “tract bomb” while driving. When he saw a hitch-hiker walking on the road, he timed his throw just right, threw the tract (rolled tight with a rubber band around it) so it would land at the feet of the hiker.
It worked every time!
He told the story of how he had thrown his “tract bomb” one day and it landed at the feet of a soldier. Several months later he was speaking at a conference and told this story of the tract and the soldier. How it landed at his feet, and the soldier picked it up. “Of course,” he said, “I don’t know what happened when he read that tract, but I can only hope he found Jesus.”
After the conference ended, a man walked over to Mr. Wemp and said, “Thank you for sharing that story of the hiker. I was that hiker who received that tract, and I did give my heart to Jesus.”
At his desk, telling his stories, Mr. Wemp introduced me to the idea of using Gospel tracts to share the Gospel with people. His love for using them rubbed off on me.
Everywhere I go I leave a tract. In public restrooms. With my tip after a delicious restaurant meal. I place them in an envelope if I make a bill payment. No matter where I go, I have a Gospel tract with me.
People know this about me as well. I was recently on a women’s retreat. There was a young woman present who did not know Jesus but she was curious. Had lots of questions. Was definitely searching. One of the girls came to me and said, “Marilyn, will you talk with Renee. I know you have a tract you can share with her.”
Indeed I did. We sat together as I walked her through The Four Spiritual Laws. I answered her questions. I sensed she needed time to think through everything that had been shared with her so I said, “Renee, why don’t you go back to your room, read through the tract again, then come to me in the morning and tell me what you think.”
She smiled and said, “Okay, I’d like that.”
The next morning when I saw her she had a big smile on her face. I sensed a new peace about her. She excitedly ran over to me, gave me a big hug and said, “Marilyn, I asked Jesus into my heart. Thank you for sharing.”
One man sharpened my love for sharing the Gospel.
