It was while doing this that I came across the Red Knot birds. These are cousins of the sandpipers, but are migrating birds. It astonished me to learn that they flew thousands of miles from Mexico to Quebec. They are small plump birds, wearing brilliantly colored coats of terracotta orange, buff, rufus and gold in the upper parts with black underparts. My human brain could not comprehend how such a small bird could accomplish such an impossible task.
However, these wise birds broke up their journey into short stopover points along the sea shore. They scheduled there campsites in places where they could rest and feast on the eggs of horse- shoe crabs. Then refreshed and relaxed they could handle the next part of their journey with renewed strength and vigor. Maybe the camel - caravans of olden days that travelled along the four thousand mile long Silk - route, had the same idea as they camped enroute in caravanserais, for rest and food. Even as I contemplated this subject, I knew it had a message for me. God always hides a message in His creation.
His messages are something surprising, distinctive and lasting. They have an effect on my imagination and memory. In this particular instance I learned the importance of stopover points -periods of rest and relaxation. Life is full of challenges, tasks and obstacles that appear beyond my power to overcome. Instead of worrying about how big they are and how small I am,I should break them up into portions that I can handle and make sure I have resting places in between. These resting places could be varied. Depending upon the challenge faced the resting place could be for a period of hours, days and may be weeks.
In my Bible I find that God provides resting places for His children before He sends them out on special missions. He sent Paul to the desert away from the bustle of city life, to spend time alone meditating and communing with God. Then he returned empowered by God to be a great missionary. He sent the prophet Eljah to camp under the trees by the brook Cherioth and then he became one the great prophets of the old Testament. As I grow older and simple and every day chores loom up like mountains God provides resting places for me too. Sitting in my old rocking chair, on my front porch under a blooming jasmine creeper, I remember my favorite resting places, sometimes under the star- studded sky, listening to the crickets tuning their violins as the night insects sing. It is then that I feel the gentle breezes of heaven and hear God whisper..

I particularly liked the thought that God uses nature to speak to us. I’ll be thinking of that as I take my walks or sit and be still, from now on.
Thank you.
