Dear Stephen,

I’m writing this letter to try and explain my unusual behavior over the past few months and also to thank you for the time and dedication you have generously given to me through your ministry. Although I may have seemed like a hopeless case throughout our friendship, the seeds you have sown are beginning to take root.

As you are aware from previous conversations about my research, this has been an exciting time. However, some recent discoveries have been rather distressing and I feel the need to spend some time away from human interaction. Please be aware that you are the only person with whom I am sharing this information. As my pastor I am counting on you to keep this information confidential until such time as I am ready to go public. I know I can trust you.

Since you are not a scientist, I will do my best to explain my findings in layman’s terms. The technical aspects would only bore you, so I will try to stick with more general terms. I know you are aware that the human brain is continually firing off tiny electric impulses. Generated by chemical reactions, these impulses travel through a network of pathways. We have been aware of this activity for years, but have never understood how or why these impulses do what they do. Electricity always follows a path of least resistance, yet in the brain the impulses seem to take on a character of their own and go where they choose. This “thought process” has intrigued me for years and has been at the heart of my research. A number of years ago, I discovered that certain high frequency radio waves had an effect on the way these impulses moved about. When certain frequencies were applied to a subject, the resulting brain activity would change. There were never any profound deviations, but minor changes would occur.

I promise you I am getting to the good part, but I had to give you a little background first. My recent discoveries were inspired by a rather unlikely source, a movie I rented. The plot was centered around white noise, noise that contains all frequencies of sound, much like the color white contains all colors mixed together. I have always been fascinated by the bombardment of white noise that comes from outside our universe and, on a whim, decided to do a little testing. The results of these tests have been very disturbing. All of my previous research had led me to believe that brain impulses were entirely internal mechanisms that generate thought. External stimuli influence thought, but the origin of the thought came from within the brain, those little electric impulses I described before. My experiments with white noise have me convinced that our brains react more like receptors than generators. The brain seems to be largely influenced by an invisible source that causes these electric impulses to fire. I realize that this concept is difficult to grasp, it has been difficult for me as well. The idea that much of our thought process is controlled by an external source, received and not generated, goes against everything that I had previously believed, but the data seems to confirm it.

I need some time away to try to digest this and I hope I have not burdened you with my findings. The truth is that everything you have taught me about the Holy Spirit may be scientific fact. I don’t know what to do with this knowledge at the current time and I am sure that if I were to go public now I would be considered a laughing stock. I just need some time to sort this out and collect my thoughts, if they are my thoughts. Thank you again for the kindness you have shown me and keep me in your prayers. I am now more convinced than ever that someone is listening.

Intriguing concept, but I would like to read more on how the white noise affects the mind. This would probably make a good longer story.

I'm not sure if I like the implication that the Holy Spirit "controls" our minds in the sense that we have no original thoughts of our own. God did not make us puppets, we have free will and free choice and can certainly think for ourselves. Perhaps though, I misunderstood your point -were you referring more to the way the Holy Spirit communicates with us, and how we respond to him? Regardless, this was an interesting read! I too enjoyed the letter format. Very clever.
